WHAT IS A DISASTER?
A disaster is an event wherein a community/communities experience severe danger and incur loss of lives and properties causing disruption its social structure and prevention of the fulfillment of all or some of the affected community’s functions. Disasters also affect everyone, especially the poor, children, women and elderly who are least capable to deal with disasters.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF DISASTERS?
There are three types of disaster and these are the following:
-
NATURAL DISASTER
Natural disasters are disasters caused by nature.examples: floods, typhoons, storm surges, earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, landslides, and ground subsidence
-
MAN-MADE DISASTER
Man-made disasters are disasters caused by man or involving human intervention. other examples: civil conflict, displacement, environmental degradation, toxic waste, oil spill, fish kills, nuclear gasses, chemical contamination, famine, drought, fires
-
COMBINATION
This type of disaster is considered a combination of the natural and man-made disaster.
examples: Landslide and flood
WHAT ARE THE GENERAL IMPACTS OF DISASTER?
- Loss of Lives
- Injuries
- Diseases
- Mental, social, physical
- Damage to properties
- Economic and environmental Degradation
THE RECENT AND MOST COMMON FACES OF DISASTER
- Typhoon (“Haiyan” or “Yolanda). Typhoons can cause strong winds and heavy rains, flood, landslides, thunderstorms, storm surges, health problems, and electrocution due to damaged wires and cables
- Volcanic Eruption.Volcanic eruption can cause ash flow, ash fall, landslide, volcanic tsunami, lava flow and mud flow
- Earthquake. Earthquake is the result of a sudden movement or sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust that create seismic waves
- Fire. The most common causes of fire are arson, overheating appliances, overloaded circuits, octopus plug-in outlets and extension, throwing of lighted cigarettes/butts, neglected rubbish/ grass fire, leaking LPG, unattended candles and incents, unattended cooking, improperly and accumulated stored combustible materials

IS TSUNAMI AND TIDAL WAVE THE SAME?
Other people may classify and define tidal wave and tsunami a one, but they are not. Although both of them are sea waves, they have different and unrelated phenomena. Tidal wave is a shallow water wave caused by the gravitational interaction between the sun, moon, and earth. Tsunami on the other hand is a sea wave caused by an underwater earthquake or landslide (usually triggered by an earthquake) displacing the ocean water.
